The University of Oregon ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International Freshmen

You should apply for admission as an international student if you are not a United States citizen or a permanent resident of the United States. U.S. citizens and permanent residents should complete the domestic application for admission.

As an undergraduate you may apply for admission as a freshman or a transfer student. You are a freshman if you completed high school (secondary school) and have not yet enrolled in a regular session at a university or college. You are a transfer applicant if you have completed high school (secondary school) and have enrolled in a college or university.
Freshman admission requirements

1. Academic requirements

For freshman level admission to the University of Oregon (UO), you must have satisfactorily completed high school (secondary school) with a B average or a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.00 scale. When making admission decisions, the characteristics of the national system of education and the level of study completed are taken into consideration. For questions about educational requirements for your specific country, please contact the Office of Admissions.

If your high school (secondary school) GPA is below a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale your application will undergo a Comprehensive Review that considers such factors as the strength of your academic course work, your grade trends, class rank, special talents, and your ability to enhance the diversity of the university. If you have less than a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale you should submit a personal statement and two letters of recommendation to increase our understanding of your educational situation.

2. Test scores

If your native language is not English, you must submit results of a standardized language test. For undergraduate admission to the UO, you must have a minimum score from one of the standardized tests below:

* TOEFL: A minimum score of 500 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 61 on the Internet-based TOEFL. In order for us to accept your TOEFL score, you must list the UO as one of your official schools to TOEFL.

* IELTS: (International English Language Testing System). Minimum score 6.0

* SAT: International students are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores for admission to the UO. An exception to this is architecture majors and students applying to the Clark Honors College, who must submit a SAT score

All international students must take an English language placement test during the International Student Orientation. Based on the placement test result, you may be required to take additional language training in the Academic English for International Students (AEIS) program. Students placed in AEIS courses may also enroll in regular academic courses.

Students with the following scores are exempted from taking the comprehensive placement test: Students with the following scores are exempted from taking the comprehensive placement test: paper-based TOEFL, 575; Internet-based TOEFL, 88; IELTS, 7.0.


3. Conditional Admission

The University of Oregon offers conditional admission to international undergraduate students who have not yet reached the required level of English language proficiency. If you are conditionally admitted, you will attend the American English Institute (AEI) to study English in an intensive environment. Upon your successful completion of the highest level of English instruction at the AEI, a letter of recommendation will be submitted to the Office of Admission by the AEI. You will then be granted full admission to the University of Oregon. While studying at the AEI, you may also submit a passing TOEFL score and be granted full admission to the University of Oregon. 4. Demonstrating financial resources

According to U.S. government regulations, all applicants who need to obtain a student (F1) visa to study in the U.S. must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to pay for tuition costs and living expenses while at the UO. You must send a bank statement or a certificate of balance prepared within the last six months or a scholarship letter with your application as proof of your financial resources.
5. Personal statements and letters of recommendation (optional)

You may send a personal statement with your application to explain special circumstances in your life that have affected you or your education. Letters of recommendation are not required for admission to the UO as an undergraduate but can be included in support of a student’s application for admission.
